  1. There are a few things Ha has done to show she is a bit of a rule-breaker. First, she touched her foot to the floor first on Tet (Page 2). When she touched her foot to the floor first on Tet, she was breaking the rules because one of her brothers was supposed to do it first. In the text it says, “I decided to wake before dawn and tap my big toe to the tile floor first.” Not even her mom knew. This is being a rule-breaker because only male feet can bring good luck on the New Year. Next, she hides her brothers sandals (Page 5). When Ha hid her brothers sandals she was being a rule- breaker because everyone in Ha’s family only has one pair of sandals. Her brothers are teasing Ha about her name, so she wants to get payback. Lastly, last September Ha went to get things at the market, but got less than expected, so Ha could get treats for herself instead of the full amount of what she was supposed to be getting (Page 19). “No one knows and I feel smart,” thinks Ha (Page 19).

In Ha’s life, she has many difficulties. Firstly, there is a war going on and her father is gone. He was captured and Ha and her family have to live without him. Next, her three older brothers tease Ha and she wants payback. Ha is jealous of her brothers because they get to do more than she gets to do. Ha wants to have more school time, too. This is frustrating to Ha and it might be why she is a rule-breaker. Ha is ten years old and her emotions cause her to be a rule-breakers because of all the things happening in the world around her.

  2. Ha proved she was a rule-breaker by buying seven eighths a bushel of spinach, ninety-nine grams of pork, and four and three quarter cubes of tofu, and used the rest of the money to buy toasted coconut, mung-bean cookies, and fried dough. Another way she was a rule breaker is when her mother said her brothers must rise first because only male feet bring good luck, she got out of bed first and tapped her big toe on the floor.

    1. Great Job!
I agree with everything you said.
Something that you could add is Ha hides her brothers saddles.
I think this is very well written.

  3. The things that make Ha a rule breaker is, she gets mad when her brother uses big words, and her mom calms her down because it might be illegal to get mad just for that. She also bought sweets when her mother said buy the things they need. She acts this way because she wants the sweets. She will give up food that is healthy for sweets.. Her dads out. She is low on food, and all those things.

  4. Some things Ha has done to show she is a bit of a rule breaker are when her mom gives her fifty dong to buy a bushel of water spinach,100 grams of pork, and 5 cubes of tofu instead she bought 99 grams of pork,⅞ of a bushel of spinach ,and 4 ¾ cubes of tofu. This proves she is a trouble maker.Another thing that Ha did that shows she is a trouble maker is she eat the hens egg even though her brother told her to let the eggs hatch so they have another hen .

  5. In buying short of what her mother told her to Ha is a bit of a rule breaker. Her mother told her to buy 100 pork grams, a bushel of water spinach, and 5 cubes of tofu. Instead she bought 99 grams of pork, ⅞ of a bushel of spinach, and 4 ¾ cubes of tofu. This shows she’s a bit of a rule breaker. She doesn’t necessarily want to buy the things her mother told her to, so she doesn’t buy them.
