Week 3 Discussion Question

Ha and her family decide to leave Saigon once the President is no longer in power. Their journey has now just begun. Their mother informs them in "Choice" that "Into each pack: on pair of pants, one pair of shorts, three pairs of underwear, two shirts, sandals, toothbrush and paste, soap, ten palms of rice grains, three clumps of cooked rice, one choice." This means they must leave everything else, essentially the only life they have ever known behind. For her 'choice' item, Ha chooses her doll. What item would you choose? If you had to leave your life behind what would be the hardest things to leave behind? Make sure to explain your choices and give specific details. This thinking will help you better relate to what Ha is going through.

Make sure to write in complete sentences using a RAD response and use details from the story to support your answers. Type this in your blogging doc first so you can make corrections if necessary. Make sure to edit and revise your answer before you post it.

  1. The item that I would choose would be my pillow pet kitten because it will offer me something to lay on and something to snuggle with when I am scared. It could also offer warmth because it’s fluffy and it can keep me warm.

The hardest thing to leave behind would be my neighbors and the great home I live in because when you leave behind your culture and your home to move to somewhere where you’re probably never going to see your home again, you’re going to miss it a lot.

      Nice job on you post.
I agree a pillow pet kitten could help when times were tough.
What other things did you consider bringing?

  2. If I had to choose one item I would choose a item of a tradition. I would choose it because, if I were Ha, I would have something that you could only find in Vietnam, not in other places. The hardest things to leave behind would be other traditional things, such as foods, festivals, and art. Some of the hardest things to leave behind would NOT be items, but traditions such as feasts, dances, festivals, and other people and special places.

    1. @Maddie:
I totally agree that it might be hard to leave behind your home and traditions, but why would you want something in Vietnam instead of somewhere else?

  3. If I had to choose one item, I would choose my camera. I would choose it because it has so many memories on it. If I felt lonesome or unhappy, then I could look at the pictures and enjoy them, knowing that good times would come, again. On my camera, some of my favorite memories are pictures of my family going to California, Oregon and all the other states west of Colorado. I also have pictures of Christmas day, two years ago when I got my camera and pictures of funny times with my sister. I also considered taking money. When I thought this through, I decided on my camera because I could earn more money, but my pictures would be lost. In Inside Out and Back, Again, it was hard for mama to give up some to the pictures she had taken. She took ten pictures with them and she burned the rest to make sure that no evidence of papa would be left at their house.
The hardest thing to leave behind would be my culture, my friends and family, my house and my school. It would be hard to give up my culture because Colorado is the only place I’ve ever known. It would be so hard to move away. It would be hard to leave my friends and family because, unlike some people, most of my family lives in Colorado and all my friends do, too. Leaving my house would be hard because I am so used to it. When I moved into this house about five miles away from my first house, it was hard to adjust; a new kitchen, bedroom and livingroom. It would be hard to move away from my school, too. The great teachers I have known for five years have taught me well. Also, the fact that I have never missed a day of school at Franklin, shows how much I love it! I could never imagine a better life than my life with my friends and family and a great school.

    1. WOW! Sophie, amazing job! I love how you connected to your experiences and added so many reasons why you would bring your camera. I like how you said that you considered taking something else, but made the trade-off of bringing a camera. Other then a few extra commas, I can't find anything wrong with it!

  4. The item I would take if I was in the situation that Ha is in is my IPOD TOUCH.It would keep me occupied because I have a lot of games on it that don’t need internet, that means that I can play those games where ever I am with out having to worry about any problems. If I had to leave some thing behind the hardest thing I would have to leave would be my soccer team and my home. Why it would be hard to leave behind my soccer team is I love soccer it is my favorite sport to play and I have a good team.
